A geographic information system (GIS) is a computer-based tool for mapping and analyzing things that exist and events that happen on earth. GIS technology is one of the fastest growing computer fields worldwide, finding its way into nearly every walk of life and using geography as a basis to analyze and display information. GIS technology integrates common database operations such as query as statistical analysis with the unique visualization and geographic analysis benefits offered by maps. Bakersfield College offers several classes in GIS, as well as a certificate program.
