Excellent Pitching Duel Leaves BC With 1- 0 Loss

Glendale's 2 Hits Enough For Shutout Performance Against Gades

With post season implications looming, the Bakersfield College Renegades hosted the Vaqueros of Glendale Tuesday at Gerry Collis field. Both teams entered the game with identical 11-8 WSC records, and both battling for a spot in the playoffs.

BC brought an aggressive mind set into the batters box, notching hits in the first three innings, while Renegade ace, Marcos Reyna pitched a masterful, hitless game through 5 innings. In the sixth inning Reyna gave up a 1-run double to Vaqueros third baseman, Sako Chapjian. Reyna (4-4) pitched 8 innings, giving up the 1 run on only 1 hit, with 11 strikeouts and 4 walks.

Glendale's left-handed hurler, Ryan Sherriff responded with a terrific complete game, allowing no runs on 4 hits with 11 strikeouts and no walks. After singles by BC in the first three innings, Sherriff (5-4) allowed 1 single in the 8th inning. The Gades led off the 8th with a single by Daniel Rueger, who was then replaced by pinch runner Riley Showers. However, Glendale was able to wiggle out of the inning undamaged.

BC head coach Tim Painton was nothing but complimentary to both pitchers. “Marcos did everything a team could ask of him – he pitched an excellent game...we just didn't take advantage of the situation." Painton continued, “But you have to hand it to their guy also. He (Sherriff) pitched great...what we all witnessed was a very good college baseball game.”

Along with the drama between the lines, the WSC standings also added to the evening game, as conference leader LA Pierce lost earlier in the day. Glendale's victory over BC placed them in a tie for first place with Pierce.

Painton wasn't concerned about the standings, the post season or anything other than Thursday's match up with the Vaqueros. “All I'm thinking about is our next game...that's it.” When pressed about the mathematical possibilities of BC making it into the post season, Painton responded, “Until they say we're not in it, we're going to believe we're still in it and get ready for Thursday.”

Renegades Lose in Extra Innings

Double Steal by Citrus in 10th inning makes for tough ending

Going into today's game at Gerry Collis field, Bakersfield College was in a three-way tie for second place in the WSC with Glendale CC and the Owls of Citrus CC with 9-7 conference records.

In a game that saw no extra base hits, 4 total strike outs and excellent pitching from both teams, the Renegades were dealt a tough loss to the Owls, 3-2. BC (17-13,9-8) collected 11 hits along the way, but costly base-running errors and an ill-advised attempted throw out in the top of the 10th gave way to the only run necessary for the Owls (15-15,10-7) to come away with the road conference win.

BC starting pitcher, Joe Nielson (4-2) pitched an excellent game, giving up only 6 hits, 2 runs, 3 walks and 3 strikeouts. Chris Rodriguez (2-1) pitched 2 2/3 innings in relief, giving up only the last run in the 10th – a run that will leave its sting in the Gades...for a couple of hours, at least.

With two outs in the top of the 10th, and runners on the corners, Owls OF, Luis Hernandez stole home while BC catcher Brock Allen attempted to pick off Charles Ball on first base. However, Ball didn't dive back to first, instead opting to float towards second base, affording Hernandez the time needed to steal home.

The bottom of the 10th inning saw only three Renegades in the batters' box, with Owls closer, Oscar Gomez finishing the deal.

When asked about the steal, Renegades head coach Tim Painton didn't mix words, “I knew it was coming, because we had just talked about it – I told them, 'eat the ball, don't throw it' – and we saw the result of what happened.”

Painton remains positive about the Gades and the rest of the season. “Our conference always comes down to the last game of the season, so we just need to get turned around in a hurry. Joe (Neilson) pitched very well today, and he gave us a chance to win. I was very pleased with our aggressive play – even our base-running mistakes were because of our aggressive mentality – and over all, we competed better today, and that's all I can ask of my guys.”

BC will host LA Mission Thursday at Gerry Collis field at 3pm.

Offense Missing In Action For BC Men Against Pierce

Brahmas make quick work of Gades with complete game from Derry

With perfect weather and a strong performance from pitcher Josh Derry, L.A. Pierce shut down Bakersfield College 8-0 to hand the Renegades their second conference loss in four days. In a game that lasted less than 2 hours, Pierce (11-9, 4-4) had 10 hits and no errors to go along with Derry's 5-hitter against the Renegades (15-7, 6-2).

BC starting pitcher, Joe Nielson (4-1) battled a tough Brahmas team, but eventually gave way to 6 hits, 5 runs, 3 walks and 6 strikeouts. BC Freshman, Taylor Aikenhead pitched well in relief, with 2 innings of shutout ball and 2 strikeouts.

However, the day belonged to Derry (3-2). With a quiet offense from BC, Derry spread his pitches across nine innings, giving up only 5 singles.

Renegades head coach Tim Painton expressed frustration with his team. “I'm very disappointed with our offense. We made no adjustments to the their pitching, and although I can't put a finger on anything specific, we're going to have to take care of ourselves quickly.”

Painton continued by saying, “Joe (Nielson) pitched a far better game than the outcome shows -and Taylor also did a fine job out the bullpen - but we had a couple of routine plays turn into errors, and ultimately...we didn't score, so that's what we have to address.” BC faces this same Pierce team Thursday, which causes concern for Painton. “Now we have to win Thursday in order to win the series.”
