Playoff opener vs. Mount SAC has familiar feel
In recent years it seems like there isn't a postseason unless Bakersfield College faces Mount San Antonio College somewhere along the way.
The Renegades (8-2) open the playoffs with their biggest possible hurdle: at top-ranked Mount SAC (10-0) Saturday at 6 p.m.
"They're on about a four-year roll," BC coach Jeff Chudy said of Mount SAC. "Since 2007 they've shown consistency with what they. They're well coached and they have good players. It's a good combination."
The Renegades and Mounties met Oct. 2 in Memorial Stadium, with the Mounties winning 34-20.
BC's season ended last year in a 39-17 loss at Mount SAC in the Southern California title game.
It was 25-17 with less than five minutes to play when the Mounties had an interception returned for a TD. They did it again in the final minute for the final margin.
In 2007, BC was undefeated and ranked No. 1 when five second-half turnovers helped Mount SAC to a 47-42 win in the SoCal title game.

BC earns share of conference title with rout of Canyons
You knew Saturday was a special day for Bakersfield College football when the normally serious head coach Jeff Chudy was all smiles in his post-game meeting with his players.
The Renegades had just routed College of the Canyons, 41-14, to secure a National Northern Conference co-championship and berth in the state playoffs as one of four Southern California teams.
BC (8-2 overall, 4-1 NNC) will learn today who it will face next Saturday in the Southern California semifinals.
"I'm totally impressed by how our attitude was," Chudy said. "Our guys feel extremely proud to be one of four (Southern California) teams in the playoffs. It's an outstanding achievement."
A Southern California Football Conference committee will determine the final ranking of playoff and bowl-eligible teams and announce all matchups today.
Chudy said he thinks the Renegades will face either Mount San Antonio or Cerritos next week. Those teams handed the Renegades their losses this season

Gades Beaten On Final Play By Cerritos
Bakersfield College looked set for another dramatic, last-second victory at Cerritos College Saturday night.
Instead it was the Falcons that pulled off an unbelievable, game-winning finish.
Cerritos stunned the Renegades by returning a blocked field goal 97 yards on the final play of the game, snapping a tie and giving the Falcons a 27-21 win that creates a logjam at the top of the National Northern Conference standings.
BC (7-2 overall, 3-1 NNC) had a chance to guarantee at least a co-championship when Josh Gallington lined up for a 47-yard field goal attempt with one second remaining in a 21-21 game.
After Cerritos coach Frank Mazzotta called three straight time outs in an attempt to rattle Gallington, the kick was attempted. Cerritos free safety Keith McGill got the block and the ball rolled toward the goal line.
McGill wasn't finished. Cerritos' Ray Craig picked up the ball at the 3 and raced up field and through many of the BC defenders. Renegade tight end Jared Hood caught Craig at the BC 20, and Craig lateraled the ball to McGill, who was trailing the play. McGill went the final 20 yards into the end zone for the game-winning touchdown.

'Gades alone atop conference at 3-0

Three games into the National Northern Conference season, Bakersfield College is the only 3-0 team.
If the Renegades are going to win the outright NNC title, they're need to earn it. BC travels to Cerritos this Saturday and concludes the regular season a week from Saturday at home vs. Canyons.
Cerritos (No. 5 in Southern California) and Canyons (No. 10) are both 2-1 in the conference. So is No. 7 Ventura, which lost to BC 27-24 in overtime on Oct. 23.
The Renegades are No. 2 in the South, behind unbeaten Mount San Antonio and ahead of Saddleback. BC lost to Mount SAC 34-20 and rallied to beat Saddleback, 41-24

BC ground game is too much for Hancock

Bakersfield College’s highly touted running back tandem of Andre Smith and Julian Dean-Johnson never saw any action in the first quarter Saturday in a game when the Renegades were looking for renewed vigor from their running game.
But no matter. The Renegades controlled the clock with its best running performance of the season and cruised to a 29-7 win over Allan Hancock College in the National Northern Conference opener for both teams at Righetti High School.

Renegades can't overcome early deficit in loss to top-ranked Mount SAC
Mount San Antonio College showed Bakersfield College why it's a state finalist the last three years, last year's state champion and ranked No. 1 in the nation this year. The Mounties controlled both sides of the line of scrimmage and downed the Renegades 34-20 before 8,612 in Memorial Stadium.
Mount SAC jumped ahead 21-0 after two quick touchdowns early in the second quarter
Aside from Dean-Johnson's touchdown play, the Mount SAC defense did a great job in the first half. BC had only eight first downs and 27 net rushing yards at halftime. Negron's 38 yards (30 on one play) was the only BC player with more than three rushing yards.
"We had a chance when we got within 28-20 but we didn't get it done," said BC coach Jeff Chudy, whose Renegades fell to 4-1. "We had too many missed tackles and too many other mistakes."
Negron was 5-of-15 for 103 yards but missed several open receivers. Campbell replaced him in the second quarter.
BC came into the game with only two turnovers in its first two games but had two on Saturday in the first 16 minutes of play

Big 2nd half carries 'Gades past Gauchos

It was only the second game of the season on Saturday night, and Bakersfield College coach Jeff Chudy wasn't ready to declare that the Renegades are a dominant team.
But Chudy, his coaching staff and players were all smiles after the Renegades rallied from an 11-point deficit late in the third quarter to shock Saddleback College, 41-24.
"We grew up today," said Dave Thorp, BC's defensive line coach. "We played with a lot of energy and we played hard. They became college football players today.

Renegades use big plays on special teams in victory over Pierce

Saturday was a rough night for the defenses in Memorial Stadium.
Bakersfield College utilized crucial plays on special teams to set the tone and held off Los Angeles Pierce College 52-41 in the season-opener for both teams.
The Renegades' defense was pushed up and down the field by a Pierce squad that finished with 601 yards of total offense, with 33 first downs.
Pierce had its own problems defending the Renegades, particularly on special teams.

Negron gets starting nod as BC Quarterback

Lyle Negron got to use the 2009 season as a learning experience as a college quarterback.
The sophomore from Murrieta Valley High School in Southern California backed up Logan Kilgore during BC's 10-2 season.
On Saturday night, Negron will open this season as the Renegades' starting quarterback when BC plays host to Los Angeles Pierce College.
Negron got the call over Byron Campbell, a redshirt freshman from Liberty High School who was recruited to Montana State but suffered a injury there before returning to Bakersfield.
