Research Workshops  

 

  • “First Come, First Served” – no preregistration.
    However, for especially popular workshops (those on Fridays, Saturdays, and in the last week of workshops) we sometimes have to turn students away. In those cases, we issue tickets to those students who arrive first. So stop by the reference desk to "check in."
  • 55 minutes in length and are held in L217 (Second floor of Library)
  • Include an in class hands-on exercise 
  • Don't be late - no admission 5 minutes after start time 
  • Although rare, classes may be cancelled or rescheduled.

Workshop Topics

  • Research Strategies.  Tips for developing a research topic including how to do subject and keyword searches.  This is a good workshop to start with.

  • Finding Books The basics of effectively searching for books and other library materials and an overview of the features of the new catalog interface.

  •  Finding Periodical Articles Online.  An overview of InfoTrac and Ebscohost including how to locate scholarly articles and narrow a search to get more relevant information —a must for anyone doing a research paper.

  • Effective Internet Searching.  Hints for improving your Internet searches with pointers on search engines, subject directories, and search techniques.  This workshop will sharpen your search skills.

  • Ethics in Research. Examines the legal and ethical issues of information use, including plagiarism, documentation of sources, and copyright.

  • Internet Evaluation.  A review of the five simple steps that can be used to determine the reliability of information found on the web--essential for anyone who intends to use the Internet for research purposes.

  • Qualifying Print Sources.  How to use Contemporary Authors, Book Review Digest,  and Magazines for Libraries  to validate the quality of your sources.

  • Current Events, Controversies and More.  An exploration of online pro/con sources, newspaper articles, and other important databases not covered in the Finding Periodical Articles Online workshop.
